FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about UV LED Lights
A UV‑A LED light generates ultraviolet light in the wavelength range of about 320–415 nm, ideal for UV curing, quality inspections, or blacklight effects.
Typical areas of application include:
UV curing of adhesives, paints, or resins
Detection of adhesive residues or contaminants
Material testing, e.g., crack detection in glass or metals
Authenticity tests (e.g., security features on documents)
Insect control or special effects in event areas
Significantly lower energy consumption
Long lifespan (up to 50,000 hours)
No warm-up time – immediately ready for use
Compact design
Free from mercury or other harmful substances
Common variants offer 365 nm, 385 nm, 395 nm, or 405 nm. The choice of wavelength depends on the respective application, as different materials or processes exhibit different reactions.
The optimal wavelength strongly depends on your specific application. For many applications in the field of curing (paints, resins, adhesives), wavelengths between 365 nm and 405 nm are typically used. For applications such as banknote inspection, fluorescence detection (e.g., in minerals, forensics), or dental material curing, more specific wavelengths or a broader spectrum within the UV-A range may be necessary. Always check the requirements of your materials or testing procedures.
Power (wattage) provides an indication of energy consumption, while intensity or irradiance (mW/cm²) is crucial for effectiveness. For applications requiring a quick or complete reaction (such as curing), high intensity is important. In cases like fluorescence inspection, lower intensity may suffice if fluorescence is strong. Even lighting of the surface is often more important than peak values at individual points.
High-quality UV-A LEDs are designed for continuous operation, provided that the specified operating conditions (e.g., temperature limits) are met.
Although UV-A light is considered less harmful than UV-B or UV-C, prolonged exposure can irritate eyes and skin. Depending on the intensity and location, protective measures like UV safety glasses or shields are recommended.
UV-A LEDs do not contain mercury, are energy efficient, and have a long lifespan. This results in less waste compared to conventional lighting solutions.
UV-A LED lights generally do not produce ozone. Ozone formation is primarily associated with UV-C radiation (shortwave UV light). Nevertheless, good ventilation of the workspace is always advisable, especially if you are working with materials that may emit fumes.
The range extends from compact modules for machine integration to robust lighting systems with aluminum profiles for industrial applications. Different lengths, voltage variants (e.g., 24 V or 230 V), and protection types are available.
UV-A LED lights are largely maintenance-free. For consistent performance, it is recommended to regularly clean the cover of dust or dirt.
Although UV-A radiation is considered less harmful than UV-B or UV-C, direct and prolonged exposure can still damage eyes and skin. It is strongly recommended to wear special UV safety glasses. For applications requiring prolonged skin exposure (e.g., working with the hand under the lamp), protective gloves or other protective measures should also be considered. Look for CE markings and other relevant safety certifications.
