Certificates and Standards for Industrial Lighting - What You Need to Know
Certificates and standards for industrial lighting are more than just technical details. They determine safety, efficiency, and practicability in everyday industrial life. Industrial lights must do more than just be bright. They should be efficient, safe, and durable, and ideally withstand demanding conditions. But how do you recognize a truly suitable LED light for industrial use? The answer lies in the complex interplay of various certificates and standards for industrial lights. In this article, we explain which standards really matter and what you should pay attention to when making a selection.
What are important certificates and standards for industrial lighting?
In an industrial environment, special lighting requirements apply. Here is an overview of the most important standards:
EN 12464-1 – Lighting of Workplaces
This standard regulates the illuminance, light distribution, glare limitation, and color rendering at workplaces. For assembly or inspection workspaces, higher requirements often apply than in traffic routes or storage areas.
DIN EN 60598 – Safety Requirements for Luminaires
It specifies which mechanical, thermal, and electrical safety features luminaires must fulfill, which is essential for continuous operation in industrial facilities.
DIN EN 62471 – Photobiological Safety
This standard assesses the potential hazard from optical radiation (e.g., UV or blue light components of LEDs). This is particularly important for machine lights with high light intensity.
DIN EN 1838 – Emergency Lighting and Safety Lighting
For systems with safety relevance (e.g., escape routes or laboratories), specific requirements for light intensity, switching times, and marking apply.
What are Typical Test Marks & Certifications in the Field of Industrial Lighting?
CE Marking
The CE marking is the legal basis for the sale of many products within the European Union. It confirms that a product meets all applicable EU directives. The CE marking is not a voluntary quality test, but a self-commitment by the manufacturer. It requires that technical documentation and a declaration of conformity are available. Without CE marking, a product cannot be sold in the EU.
ENEC Mark
The ENEC mark is a voluntary European quality mark for electrical products such as luminaires, power supplies, or controls. It proves that the product has been tested according to the relevant European safety standards and that production is also subject to regular quality controls. The ENEC mark signals particularly high safety and quality standards.
IP Protection Ratings (e.g., IP67)
The IP protection rating (Ingress Protection) indicates how well a housing is protected against the intrusion of foreign objects (e.g., dust) and water. The protection rating is indicated by two digits: the first digit stands for protection against solid substances, the second for protection against water.
IK Protection Ratings
The IK protection rating describes the resistance of a housing to mechanical impacts such as blows or shocks. The assessment follows the standard EN 62262 and is divided into IK classes from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (highest protection). A housing with IK10 withstands mechanical loads of up to 20 joules – this corresponds to the impact of a heavy tool.
What does this mean for your selection?
Not every LED light is automatically suitable for every place of use. Those who want to be on the safe side should not only look at brightness or price but also specifically at the following features:
- Does the light meet EN 12464-1 for my workplace type?
- Is the light approved for continuous use (EN 60598)?
- Does the IP protection meet my environmental conditions?
- Are potential hazards from UV or blue light excluded (EN 62471)?
- Are test certificates (e.g., ENEC) documented and traceable?
