EU Legislation: Ban on Halogen Lamps from 1st September 2018

Step by step, power-hungry electrical devices are being phased out in Europe. Lighting is a part of this. On September 1, 2018, the final stage of EU legislation (ban on halogen lamps) comes into effect. Halogen lamps will then no longer be manufactured or imported for further sale on the European market.

Which lamps are affected? All halogen light sources with an energy efficiency class lower than Class B, which operate without a transformer and emit light all around. Most of these lamps are equipped with E27 or E14 sockets. Are there any exceptions?Yes. Halogen lamps with energy class C and R7s and G9 sockets, as well as halogen light sources for which there are no alternatives due to their special function, are exempt from the ban. What should be done? The ban is initially directed at producers and manufacturers of halogen lamps. End customers are typically only affected when retailers no longer offer halogen lamps for sale. How are halogen lamps disposed of?Halogen lamps can be conveniently disposed of in regular trash, as the components of a halogen lamp are essentially metal and glass.
